Today, several important dates are celebrated in the world and in Ukraine — from church events to international initiatives aimed at preserving nature and developing science.
On this day, believers honor the memory of the holy protomartyr and equal to the apostles Thecla. She was born in Iconium (now the territory of Turkey) and converted to Christianity under the influence of the preaching of the Apostle Paul. Having renounced marriage, Thecla dedicated her life to serving Christ. She was repeatedly tried to be executed for her faith, but, according to legend, she miraculously remained alive. After that, she continued to preach, converting people to Christianity.
September 24 is popularly known as Zarevnytsia, because it was during this period that the sky often shone with bright red sunrises and sunsets. The traditions and signs of this day emphasized the change in weather. If it rained, they expected a wet autumn, a strong wind foreshadowed blizzards in winter, and storks that had not flown away were considered a sign of a warm, long autumn.
It was believed that on this day one should not start new business, quarrel or borrow money. The prohibitions were associated with the belief in preserving peace and well-being in the family.
In addition to the church calendar, September 24 also has international significance. This day is celebrated as World Gorilla Day, which was established in 2017 to draw attention to the conservation of these animals. Also, events are held around the world for World Cancer Research Day, aimed at supporting science and cancer research.
In addition, World School Milk Day, launched under the auspices of FAO, is celebrated to highlight the importance of healthy nutrition for children. September 24 is also the World Day Against Software Patents and International Caravan Day, which celebrates the work of people in the field of transport.
Thus, September 24 combines spiritual, cultural, and scientific significance, remaining a day rich in historical, religious, and international events.
