Left baby in apartment for five days: underage mother to go to trial in Kyiv

A pre-trial investigation has been completed in Kyiv in the case of a minor mother who left her 7-month-old son alone in a locked apartment for five days without water, food, or care. The Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office has submitted an indictment to the court.

The tragedy occurred back in January 2025. The 17-year-old girl left for another region, leaving her child without any help. When law enforcement officers and medics arrived at the apartment, they found the baby in extremely serious condition. He was immediately hospitalized.

According to doctors, the child's serious condition was caused not only by the many days of lack of food and water, but also by general neglect - the mother did not systematically care for her son. The boy was diagnosed with damage to vital organs due to exhaustion.

The child is currently continuing treatment under medical supervision.

The minor's actions are classified under Part 3 of Article 135 (abandonment in danger) and Article 166 (malicious failure to fulfill obligations to care for a child) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. She faces up to 8 years in prison.

The case has been referred to the court, which will determine the punishment for the grieving mother.
