The Committee for the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine has published the list of cultural figures nominated in eight categories who have advanced to the third round of the competition. The results will be summed up in March, when the winners will be selected from these candidates and will receive the highest state award for their significant contribution to the development of culture and art.
Changes in nominations and new rules
2024 brought several innovations, including the addition of a new category – “Decorative and Applied Arts”, which was a logical step in reflecting a wider spectrum of cultural activity in Ukraine. However, there were also changes in the existing nominations. Thus, in the “Theatrical Art” category, two performances were excluded from the list of applicants: the opera “Dialogues of the Carmelites” by Vasyl Vovkun and the play “Chervona Ruta” by Maksym Holenko. The reason for the exclusion of “Dialogues of the Carmelites” is related to the violation of the application deadlines – the premiere took place after the established deadline.
Nominees for the 2024 Shevchenko Prize
In the “Literature” , the third round included works by authors such as Yuriy Izdryk, Svitlana Povalyaeva, Maryana Savka, and others. Their works cover a variety of genres and topics, from poetry to prose, which clearly reflects the breadth of the literary process in Ukraine.
The category “Literary and Art Studies” presents publications dedicated to the history of Ukrainian literature and its connections with other cultural traditions, in particular, the work of Valeriy Bitayev, Vladyslav Kornienko, and Yuriy Mosenkis, which reveals the centuries-old literary heritage of Ukraine.
Publicism and journalism are represented by the works of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Pavlo Kazarin, which highlight important historical and social processes important for the modern development of the country.
In the field of “Musical Art”, this year, such iconic groups and individuals as the band “Pyrig i Batig” with the album “Zeleny” and composers Bohdana Pivnenko and Oleksiy Shymko, whose music leaves a deep mark on the cultural life of Ukraine, have been nominated for the award.
Visual arts traditionally attract the attention of domestic and international audiences with their unique and emotionally charged works. Vera Barynova’s exhibition “The Scream of Silence” and other works by Ukrainian artists reflect complex social and political themes relevant to our time.
