What Ukraine needs to use the F-16

Recently, Ukraine received the first long-awaited F-16 fighters. It is planned that by the end of 2028, the number of these aircraft will increase to at least 79 units. However, Defense Express analysts warn that even if this plan is fully implemented, the country may face serious difficulties in using the new aircraft.

First, Ukraine needs a large number of pilots trained and certified to operate the F-16. A minimum of 79 qualified pilots is required, but in reality the number must be much higher to ensure efficient operation and adequate rest. It is known that the newly established training center in Romania recently graduated the first group of 7 pilots who trained for 8 months. This is the only center in Europe that has been training F-16 pilots since February this year. However, Romania itself faces the problem of a lack of aviators, as it receives an additional 32 fighters from Norway.

Technical personnel are another important component for the effective use of fighters. Although some problems can be solved by attracting foreign volunteers or through private military companies, the maintenance and supply of weapons remains. The United States suggests that European partners purchase weapons for Ukrainian aircraft directly from the United States.

Sufficient supplies of spare parts, engines and other components for aircraft repair must also be provided. In addition, the throughput capacity of aircraft repair enterprises is important, since the maintenance of aircraft in combat conditions requires much more frequent repairs.

Another key issue is the organization of placement and protection of new fighters. In order to ensure their safety, it is necessary not only to disperse the aircraft to several air bases, but also to place them in protected shelters. It is also necessary to equip the bases with air defense systems, such as Patriot, as well as to have additional air defense systems and means of electronic warfare to protect against missiles and drones.

While the problem of not having enough F-16 fighters is important, there are many other complex challenges that need to be addressed. According to analysts, these problems will be solved gradually and systematically.

In the context of the transfer of fighters, representatives of the US State Department clarified their position on the possibility of using the F-16 for attacks deep into the territory of the Russian Federation, noting that they constantly assess the security situation and the needs of the Armed Forces. Military expert Oleksandr Musienko emphasized that Western F-16 fighter jets can significantly strengthen Ukraine's capabilities in the war against Russia.
