With the start of martial law in Ukraine, the mobilization rules are subject to constant changes, and recent updates apply to men in the older age category. According to the changes, men over the age of 50 can be mobilized under special conditions if they meet certain criteria.
Who is subject to mobilization?
According to the law "On Mobilization Training and Mobilization", men between the ages of 18 and 60 who:
- do not have a postponement;
- are not in the reservation;
- recognized as fit for service by the results of the Military Medical Commission (MMC).
Men over the age of 50 can be mobilized only if they have a deficient military accounting specialty, and this requires a separate order from the General Staff of the Armed Forces.
Features for different age categories
- 18-25 years old : belong to the category of conscripts, service is possible only at will.
- 25-60 years old : mobilized on general grounds, if recognized as fit or previously had the status of "limited fit" (with repeated VLK).
- 50+ years : special mobilization in scarce specialties with a corresponding order.
By February 4, 2025, all conscripts must undergo a medical examination within the framework of the VLK. Those with the status of "limited fit" are also subject to re-examination.
The main goal of the changes is to optimize the use of resources during mobilization and to attract to the ranks of the Armed Forces specialists whose knowledge and skills are critically important for the country's defense capability.
The mobilization of older persons will become more common if circumstances at the front require it. At the same time, the legislation provides for clear control and justification of such decisions.
Citizens are recommended to regularly check their military status and contact the military commissariat for clarification in case of receiving summonses.
