Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal announced during the International Transport Forum that the partial opening of airspace in Ukraine is currently impossible due to the security situation. He emphasized that security and the need for air defense are the main factors complicating the opening of air traffic. Shmyhal noted that it is important to focus on the development of alternative transport routes, in particular across the land border, as well as using road and rail transport.
He also reported that Russian attacks have significantly damaged aviation infrastructure, with over 15 civilian airports damaged. In addition, the Russians have carried out nearly 60 attacks on port infrastructure, resulting in damage or destruction of over 300 facilities and 22 civilian vessels, with numerous casualties.
Despite these difficulties, thanks to the efforts of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, the maritime corridor has been stabilized. According to Shmyhal, over 75 million tons of cargo were transported through it on more than 2,800 ships during the war. This allows maintaining important international supplies, despite problems in other areas of transport infrastructure.
Also, the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development, together with the US Embassy, presented a roadmap for opening Ukrainian airspace under martial law in order to preserve aviation infrastructure and qualified personnel, which will allow for the rapid resumption of civil flights after the end of the war.
