Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmygal said during the International Transport Forum that partial opening of the airspace in Ukraine is currently impossible due to the security situation. He emphasized that security and the need for air defense are the main factors that complicate the opening of air traffic. Shmyhal noted that it is important to focus on the development of alternative transport routes, in particular through the land border, as well as with the help of road and rail transport.
He also said that the aviation infrastructure was significantly damaged as a result of the Russian attacks, and more than 15 civilian airports were damaged. In addition, the Russians launched nearly 60 attacks on port infrastructure, resulting in the damage or destruction of more than 300 facilities and 22 civilian vessels, with numerous human casualties.
Despite these difficulties, thanks to the efforts of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, it was possible to stabilize the sea corridor. According to Shmygal, over 75 million tons of goods were transported through it during the war on more than 2,800 ships. This makes it possible to maintain important international deliveries, despite problems in other areas of the transport infrastructure.
Also, the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development, together with the US Embassy, presented a road map for opening the airspace of Ukraine under martial law in order to preserve the aviation infrastructure and qualified personnel, which will allow for the rapid resumption of civilian flights after the end of the war.
