The seven most in-demand military specialties in Ukraine

Ukraine continues active mobilization, adapting the process of military recruitment to modern challenges. Despite the fact that the main role in this is played by the Territorial Recruitment Centers (TCC), army recruiting centers are becoming increasingly popular. They do not simply carry out planned mobilization tasks, but select specialists in accordance with the real needs of the front, taking into account the abilities and civilian professions of those liable for military service.

At the beginning of 2025, military recruiters identified seven key specialties that are in greatest demand in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

TOP-7 most sought-after military specialties

1. UAV specialists (16%)

Drone warfare has become a reality of modern warfare, and UAV operators, engineers, and maintenance technicians are the most in-demand specialists. Drone operators are the eyes on the battlefield, and UAV maintenance and equipment specialists ensure their smooth operation.

“Of course, the most important people here are the operators. But after the task is completed, they need to rest, and the drone needs to be checked, repaired, and charged. If it is an FPV drone, it also needs to be equipped,” says Sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Vadym Shevchuk.

2. Drivers and mechanics (16%)

War is impossible without transport. From armored vehicles to ordinary trucks — all of this requires drivers and mechanics. In the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the category of a driver's license is not always important — they train on the spot.

“If you have category B, they can give you anything — from an armored personnel carrier to a tank. The main thing is that your hands grow from the right place,” explains Shevchuk.

3. Shooting specialties (15%)

Assault rifles, snipers, machine gunners, and grenade launchers are the backbone of combat units. These specialists fire on the enemy and perform combat missions in the most dangerous conditions.

4. Staff positions (9%)

Despite active fighting, no more than 30% of the military are on the front lines. The rest support their work: they are engaged in logistics, communications, and the supply of weapons and food.

“Every day I fill out combat logs: who went where, how much ammunition was used. Reports on all types of support, accounting for each flask. There is a lot of paperwork,” says Senior Lieutenant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Vyacheslav Konovalov.

5. Artillery (6%)

Artillerymen remain an important component of the Ukrainian army, although they are giving way to drones. They are specialists in cannon and rocket artillery, mortars, and MLRS operators.

6. Doctors (5%)

Medical service is a key element of the army. Combat medics, paramedics, and doctors save lives on the front lines and in hospitals.

“Currently, there are less than 5% of female nurses in the army, so it is more correct to say 'nurse',” notes military surgeon Danilo Mikhailov.

7. Communications and cybersecurity professionals (5%)

Modern warfare is not just about weapons, it's also about technology. Signals and cybersecurity specialists are responsible for ensuring reliable communications and protecting military systems from enemy attacks.

How does the recruiting system work?

As of 2025, there are 48 army recruiting centers , offering over 10,000 vacancies in the Armed Forces, National Guard, State Border Service, and SBU.

1,200 people apply to these centers every week 35,000 citizens have become candidates for the army since the recruitment system was launched .

The Ukrainian army is constantly changing, adapting to the realities of modern warfare. And while tankers and artillerymen used to play the main role, today the biggest focus is on drones, mobility, and high technology.

The demand for military specialties varies depending on the situation on the front, but key areas : drones, mobility, infantry units, communications and logistics. If you are planning to join the defense of Ukraine, the recruiting centers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will help you find the best place according to your skills and experience.
