Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell expressed pessimism about the chances of Congress approving a new funding package for Ukraine by Christmas, even if a cross-party deal is reached.
According to him, there will be no agreements on legislation to help Ukraine and other countries if President Joe Biden is not actively involved in negotiations with Republicans on limiting the crossing of the border with Mexico by migrants.
"It's virtually impossible -- even if we do reach an agreement -- to draft a bill, get it through the Senate, send it to the House of Representatives before Christmas," McConnell said.
This position may delay the provision of additional aid to Ukraine, as provided for in the draft law currently under consideration.
Biden has already approved the allocation of $200 million in military aid to Ukraine, including various equipment and artillery. However, the question of additional funding comes amid opposition from some Republicans.
The US Congress has yet to approve Biden's request for additional funding due to partisan differences. The plan to provide assistance to Ukraine is included in the draft law, which also concerns Israel and Taiwan.
