Ukraine announced an attempt on the life of the former mayor of Kupyansk, Gennady Matsegora, who was the head of the city at the time of its capture by Russia in March 2022.
The Main Intelligence Directorate reports that the assassination attempt took place on June 7 in the city of Stary Oskol, Belgorod Region of the Russian Federation. Matsegora is said to be in critical condition.
A criminal case is being investigated against the former mayor in Ukraine under the article "High Treason".
“Matsegora voluntarily agreed to full cooperation with the Russian invaders. In particular, in June 2022, he signed the so-called protocol on the creation of the occupation Kharkiv administration and publicly announced this,” the GUR said.
Russian Telegram channels are reporting that the former mayor of Kupyansk has been hospitalized in Moscow. He is in serious condition.
The assassination attempt took place near Matsegora's house. In Stary Oskol, he headed a sports complex.
