Ukraine announced an attempt on the former mayor of Kupyansk, Gennady Matsegoru, who headed the city at the time of its capture by Russia in March 2022.
The Main Directorate of Intelligence reports that the attempt took place on June 7 in the city of Stary Oskol, Belgorod Region of the Russian Federation. Matsegora is said to be in a critical condition.
A criminal case under the article "Treason against the State" is being investigated in Ukraine against the former mayor.
"Matsegora voluntarily agreed to fully cooperate with the Russian invaders. In particular, in June 2022, he signed the so-called protocol on the establishment of the occupying Kharkiv administration and publicly announced it," the HUR said.
Russian Telegram channels write that the former mayor of Kupyansk was hospitalized in Moscow. He is in serious condition.
The attempt was made near Matsegora's house. He headed the sports complex in Stary Oskol.
