A severe cold snap is approaching Ukraine, which could cause serious transportation problems, road accidents, and utility outages. Forecasters are warning of a return of winter conditions in the coming days — with night frosts, snowfall, and ice.
According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, Arctic air will begin to affect the weather in Ukraine starting from April 6. In most regions, a sharp drop in temperature, gusty winds up to 15–20 m/s, snow and ice are expected. In particular, on the night of Saturday, April 6, in Zhytomyr region, Vinnytsia region and western regions, forecasters predict frosts down to -5 °C.
On the night of April 7, a cold snap will cover almost the entire territory of the country, except for some areas in the east and southeast. Precipitation will continue during the day, and ice will form on the roads in the western regions and Vinnytsia region.
The sharp deterioration in the weather is associated with the movement of cold Arctic air and an active cyclone, which will bring precipitation and wind. According to the State Emergency Service, expected snowfalls in some places can reach 15 cm, which will complicate the work of transport, utility and energy services.
Rescuers are urging drivers to be as careful as possible, avoid long trips without urgent need, and heed ice warnings.
Despite the temporary return of winter, the overall trend for April remains positive. As forecaster Igor Kibalchych noted, after a short period of cooling, the temperature will gradually rise, and the number of sunny days will increase.
According to climate forecasts, April in Ukraine will generally be warmer than the long-term average. The temperature will exceed the norm by +1.5…+2.7 °C, especially in the northern and eastern regions of Europe.
However, Ukrainians are advised not to rush to change their winter wardrobe and to be prepared for another surprise from the weather.
