On Monday, April 14, Orthodox Christians celebrate two important dates at once - the Day of St. Martin's memory, Pope, and the first day of Holy Week, known as Great Monday.
It is a period of special spiritual preparation for Easter, when believers remember the suffering of Jesus Christ. Today, believers turn to St. Martin for protection against poverty and bad habits, as well as starting general cleaning in their homes - preparing for the brightest holiday of the Christian calendar.
Church
April 14 in the new style is the day of Reverend Martin, the Confessor, the Pope. He lived in the VII century, opposed heresy, for which he was persecuted by the emperor and exiled to the Crimea, where he died. He is considered a deputy in difficult life circumstances.
The old style today honors the Holy Maria of Egypt - a symbol of repentance and spiritual purification.
Holy Week started
This week is the harshest in the big post. On the great Monday, the churches mention the righteous Joseph, whom the brothers sold, and read the parable of a barren. The temples prepare peace - special oil for sacraments.
Folk traditions and signs
In the people this day is known as Martin Lisogon - it was believed that it was on this day that foxes were looking for new burrows, and it is time for people to update their homes.
