Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell expressed pessimism about the chances of Congress approving a new funding package for Ukraine by Christmas, even if a bipartisan agreement is reached.
According to him, there will be no agreement on legislation to aid Ukraine and other countries if President Joe Biden is not actively involved in negotiations with Republicans on restricting migrants from crossing the border with Mexico.
“It’s virtually impossible – even if we reach an agreement – to develop a bill, get it through the Senate, send it to the House of Representatives by Christmas,” McConnell said.
This position could delay the provision of additional assistance to Ukraine, as provided for in the draft law currently under consideration.
Biden has already approved $200 million in military aid for Ukraine, including various equipment and artillery. However, the question of additional funding is arising due to opposition from some Republicans.
The US Congress has yet to approve Biden's request for additional funding due to partisan differences. The aid plan for Ukraine is included in a bill that also covers Israel and Taiwan.
