Heat that changes everything: how high temperatures affect the body, brain and psyche

The World Health Organization is alarmed: climate change has led to a significant increase in the number of people suffering from heat. In the period from 2000 to 2016, the number of victims increased annually by 125 million people - and this figure is increasing every year.

The human body consumes considerable resources to maintain a stable body temperature - approximately 37 ° C. At rest, we produce as much heat as a 100-watt light. When the temperature of the environment exceeds the comfortable threshold, the body activates the mechanisms of cooling: sweating, accelerated heartbeat, reduction of physical activity.

In the heat, the heart begins to work more intense - about 10 beats per minute faster. This helps to pump blood to the surface of the skin so that the body can cool through sweat. But excessive sweating leads to the loss of water-salt balance, which causes muscle convulsions, headache, nausea, weakness.

When the air is too humid, the sweat does not evaporate and the body cannot cool effectively. Therefore, the hot day before the rain or during the fog is much harder than dry heat.

The most vulnerable are overweight people, cardiovascular disease, lung diseases, as well as those who are 45. Physically unprepared persons and those who drink little water are also more at risk. Congenital features are also influenced by sweating, thermoregulation, electrolyte balance.

Interestingly, women are usually worse tolerate heat because of a smaller body area and a weaker sweating, but with age this difference is erased because more men are faced with heart problems.

Studies show that the heat can exacerbate mental illness - anxiety, schizophrenia, dementia. There is also an increase in drug abuse. High temperature affects the concentration of attention, reduces intellectual abilities and increases the risk of errors in operation.

Even a moderate fever can affect the course of chronic diseases, provoke premature birth, skin infections, kidney problems.

After the weekend with the rains, heat returns to Ukraine. The temperature will rise to +29 ° C. In most of the territory - changing cloudiness. West, center and north are expected to be short -lived.
