Ukrainians are set for a warm but dry spring, forecasters predict. The average temperature will be 1-2°C above normal, and precipitation could be three times less than usual. This could negatively affect agriculture, in particular due to a lack of moisture in the soil and possible early frosts.
This was reported by the head of the department of applied meteorology and climatology of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute of the State Emergency Service, Vira Balabukh.
Meteorologists predict an abnormally warm spring in Ukraine, which will last from March to May 2025. According to the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, the air temperature at the beginning of spring may be 1-2 degrees above the climatic norm. Such an anomaly will affect weather conditions in different regions of Ukraine.
At the same time, despite the warm weather, the country could face serious problems due to the lack of sufficient rainfall. It is expected that during the season there will be three times less than usual, which will affect the country's agricultural sector.
In March, the temperature will range from +5 to +7 degrees in the south of Odessa region and Transcarpathia, and from +3 to +4 in the east of Ukraine. In April, the average temperature will exceed +10 degrees, which will contribute to active vegetation. In the South, temperatures are expected to reach +12 degrees, and in the North and East - about +11 degrees.
The temperature in May will be especially important for farmers, when the average air temperature will reach +15 degrees, and in the southwest of the country - up to +17 degrees.
However, given the increased temperature, the probability of sharp cold snaps in Ukraine is increasing, especially in Polesie and in the forest-steppe zones, which could lead to frosts. Meteorologists warn that this will be critical for early crops, which will begin their growing season much earlier.
Additionally, a serious deficit in precipitation is forecast in the northern regions of Ukraine, where rainfall could be significantly below normal. Overall, the country's total precipitation could reach only 100 millimeters per season, which is typical for the southern steppes.
These changes in weather conditions can significantly affect agriculture, particularly yields and the availability of water resources for irrigation.
We remind you that frosty weather will persist in Ukraine in the coming days, but by the end of the week, temperatures in a number of regions will begin to rise to slight “pluses.” Little precipitation is expected, but icy conditions will persist on the roads.
