US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset has declared plans to reduce military assistance funding for Ukraine in the federal budget for 2026. He reported this during the hearing at the House of Representatives of the US Congress, reports the Associated Press on June 10.
According to Hegset, the current administration of President Donald Trump has a different vision of conflict development in Ukraine. "We believe that peaceful settlement will be in the interests of both parties and in the interests of our country, especially in view of all competitive interests throughout the world," he said.
The Pentagon head also noted that the word "victory" does not have a clear definition, so he said, a priority for the US is "finding a way to peace and termination of murder."
Since the beginning of a full -scale war in February 2022, the United States provided military assistance to more than $ 66 billion. However, after the inauguration of Trump in March 2025, the supply was temporarily discontinued - according to reports, this happened by the verbal order of Pita Hegset. As a result, at least 11 cargo weapons were canceled.
Although the Trump administration inherited the authority to give Ukraine weapons from the Pentagon warehouses for up to $ 3.85 billion, no new weapons pack was approved after his entry. At the same time, the Ukrainian side declared a willingness to buy a considerable package of weapons at its own expense, which can be an alternative to direct military assistance.
During a briefing on June 10, the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Georgy Tykhy, noted that US military assistance continues to receive within previously agreed agreements. According to him, Ukrainian diplomats are working on maintaining this support and negotiations on the purchase of weapons under the investment agreement between Ukraine and the USA.
