Over the last few months, representatives of the United States and Russia have secretly held a series of unofficial meetings in Switzerland, discussing the possibility of termination of war in Ukraine. The last of these meetings took place last week, reports Reuters, citing informed sources.
These negotiations, which are described as an "additional channel" for diplomatic discussions began immediately after Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election in November 2024. According to sources, participants in negotiations have diplomatic experience, but are not official representatives of the governments of their countries. It remains unclear who has just sent them to these meetings, although several Trump advisers are known about these contacts.
"Little is known about the details of these meetings, in particular on the agenda, the availability of Ukrainians in the negotiations and the time of the beginning of contacts," the message stated. These secret negotiations emphasize the efforts of the US and Russia to find opportunities to end the war in Ukraine, the sources say.
One of the negotiation participants described these meetings as an unofficial dialogue whose purpose was to exchange ideas and improve communication, not to develop specific proposals. According to some information, one of these meetings was held in Geneva during the Munich Conference on Safety of Last Week.
Sources are currently suggested that these unofficial negotiations have probably lost their relevance, since the US and Russia have established official dialogue channels to discuss the situation in Ukraine. It is worth noting that such negotiations were held in 2023-2024, when Russia expressed its readiness to consider ceasefire in Ukraine, but these attempts seem to have not produced results.
