The Lord's Settling: Traditions, Signs and Prohibitions of the Day

On February 2, Orthodox celebrates the Lord's Settlement - one of the main twenty holidays on the new church calendar. This day symbolizes the meeting of the Old and New Testaments, and in folk traditions - winter and spring.

We tell you what traditions are related to this holiday, which can and cannot be done on February 2, as well as what holiday is celebrated on this day in the old style.

What is the church holiday today?

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine celebrates the Lord's Settlement . The believers remember the biblical event when the Virgin Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the temple. There they were met by the old man Simeon, who predicted the important mission of Christ.

According to the old style (Julian calendar) on February 2, the Day of Remembrance of the Reverend Euphimy of the Great, Reverend Euphimia, Twimnik and Laurentius, the Cruzman of the Kiev-Pechersk, as well as the martyrs of Inna, Pinna and Rimma.

In the people, the day is considered the day when winter occurs with the summer, and the weather of this day determine what spring will be:

  • If the thaw - spring will be warm;
  • snow - rainy and long spring;
  • blizzard - spring late and cold;
  • strong wind - a good fruit harvest;
  • Clear weather - flax will be born.

There is also a saying: "The sun is the sun - in the summer, winter is in the cold."

What can not be done on February 2?

On a church holiday it is worth refrain from:

  • swearing, quarrels, envy and evil thoughts;
  • travel at long distances;
  • cutting of trees;
  • cleaning in the house and needlework (according to popular beliefs).

What can be done?

  • visit the temple, pray for health and well -being;
  • consecrate a candle and water - it is believed that they have a special power;
  • spend the day alone and harmony.

Who celebrates the Angel Day?

On February 2, the birthday celebrates Basil, and in the old style - Yukhim, Inna, Paul, Lion.

The Lord's Settlement is a special day when, according to beliefs, winter gradually loses power, and spring begins to wake up. This is a good time for prayer, spiritual purification and good deeds.
