Ukrainian surgeons of the National Scientific Center of Surgery and Transplantology named after O.O. Shalimov performed a unique operation for a serviceman, who had skin transplanted on his face after a severe mine-explosive wound. The operation, which was conducted under the leadership of the head of the Department of Microvascular, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Yevgeny Simulik, became an important stage in the treatment of a wounded soldier who was injured while performing his duties.
A military serviceman who went to defend Ukraine at the beginning of the war was injured by a landmine in January 2024. A metal fragment hit him in the face through the cheek, seriously damaging the upper jaw and causing a defect in the hard palate. This made it impossible for him to eat and breathe normally.
According to representatives of the medical institution, the operation was high-tech: a team of surgeons used a vascularized fragment of the scapula to close the defect in the palate, which allowed the restoration of vital functions. The patient has already been able to start eating, but one more operation awaits him ahead of him, which will allow him to establish full breathing and install dental implants.
