On Saturday, April 26, according to the new church calendar, believers honor the holy martyr Basil, Bishop of Amasia, and the virgin Glafira of Amasia. Also today, Orthodox Christians celebrate Holy Saturday, the final day of Easter week.
The Orthodox Church of Ukraine switched to a new calendar style in 2023, so non-transitory holidays were moved 13 days earlier. At the same time, some believers continue to adhere to the old style.
Who is honored on April 26:
The Hieromartyr Basil lived in the 4th century in Asia Minor. He defended Christians from the persecution of the pagan emperor Licinius. Basil sheltered the virgin Glafira, who was fleeing persecution, and helped her build a temple, but due to a denunciation, both were summoned to the emperor. Glafira died on the way, and Basil was executed for refusing to renounce his faith.
According to the old style, today we also commemorate the holy martyr Artemon.
