On Wednesday, July 16, Orthodox Christians commemorate the memory of St. John of Vyshensky, one of the most prominent religious figures of the 17th century, a thinker, polemicist, and Athos ascetic. They also commemorate the martyr Athenagenes and his disciples on this day, and the holiday is popularly called Phinogeus Day.
Who is Ioan Vyshensky?
John Vyshensky was born in the Lviv region, lived during the period of oppression of the Orthodox faith and spent about 40 years on Mount Athos, where he led an ascetic life. His works became classics of polemical literature: in particular, he spoke out against the union, criticized the Latinization of the church, participated in the reform of monasteries in Volhynia and in the creation of the Manyavsky Skete. According to legend, Vyshensky spent the last years of his life in solitude, walled up in a cave.
John was officially canonized as a saint in 2016. He is prayed to for spiritual wisdom, endurance, and strength of mind in difficult times.
