On Wednesday, July 16, Orthodox Christians commemorate the memory of Reverend John Vyshensky - one of the most striking religious figures of the seventeenth century, the thinker, the polemicist and the Athos ascetic. Also this day is remembered by the martyr of Athenophogen and his students - and in the people the holiday is called the Fin -Hey Day.
Who is John Vyshensky
John Vyshensky was born in Lviv region, lived during the oppression of the Orthodox faith and spent about 40 years on Athos, where he led ascetic life. His works became a classic of polemical literature: in particular, he opposed the union, criticized the Latinization of the Church, participated in the reform of monasteries in Volyn and in the creation of the Maniavsky Skit. According to legend, Vyshensky spent the last years of his life in loneliness, wrapped in a cave.
In 2016, John was officially canonized as a saint. He is praying for strengthening spiritual wisdom, endurance and spiritual strength in complex moments.
