Roman Afonov, the current head of the main department of the State Tax Service of Zaporizhia region, began his career as a tax inspector after working as an accountant. According to his official biography, he worked as an inspector for 12 years. In 2012, Afonov made a sharp career leap, heading the district DPI in Zaporizhia, changing Donetsk region to Zaporizhia.
His wife, Olga Afonova, is a registered entrepreneur and owns several plots of land in Bucha, where luxury homes are built. According to the declaration, they built the first two-story house with an area of 187 sq m in just 8 days, which raises suspicions of using tax evasion schemes and hiding the real value of the property.
In addition, Olga Afonova owns a share of office real estate in the Podilskyi district of Kyiv worth UAH 600,000. Her mother, Natalia Afonova, a former state-owned mine worker and now also an entrepreneur, owns two apartments in the capital, purchased in 2015–2016. The cost of housing, according to market estimates, significantly exceeds the family's officially declared income.
Similar schemes have already prompted complaints from the NACP against other civil servants, including prosecutors, who tried to hide the real value of the purchased real estate by registering it as unfinished construction. In the case of the Afonovs, there is a possibility that similar corruption schemes were used to legalize the property.
Currently, part of the Afonov family lives abroad, in particular in Cyprus, where they continue to engage in entrepreneurial activities.
