British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called for security guarantees for Ukraine before a possible peace deal with Russia is signed, warning that without such guarantees, Vladimir Putin will once again break the agreements, as he has done before.
Starmer said the Kremlin's negative reaction to the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire was not a surprise to him. He noted that Moscow has repeatedly proven its inconsistency in adhering to agreements, and therefore pressure needs to be increased.
"Russia is an aggressor, and Putin makes no secret of his imperial ambitions. If he is not going to violate the peace agreements, then he should have no problem with security guarantees for Ukraine. But his reaction only confirms that he will try to violate them again," the British Prime Minister said.
Starmer emphasized that the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine will be discussed at a meeting of international leaders to be held on March 15 in London.
The Ukrainian side has repeatedly stated that any peace agreement must be accompanied by effective security mechanisms. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously warned that without guarantees, Ukraine will not sign peace, as Russia may violate it again.
Not everyone in the US and NATO shares this position. President Donald Trump believes that guarantees should be discussed only after the war is over, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has said that “first we need to achieve peace, then we need to sustain it.”.
Western allies continue to debate how to protect Ukraine from new Kremlin aggression. At the same time, Russia itself categorically rejects any guarantees, which once again confirms its intention to maintain the possibility of further pressure on Ukraine.
