SBI detained the leadership of the correctional colony for torturing prisoners

The State Bureau of Investigation, together with the Prosecutor General's Office, has exposed and detained the leadership of a correctional colony in the Kharkiv region. Five officials are suspected of systematic abuse and torture of prisoners.

According to the investigation, the administration of the institution forced prisoners to work unpaid and overtime, accompanied by humiliation and threats. Psychological methods and intimidation were used to put pressure on people.

"In addition, disciplinary measures were used without reason - prisoners were placed in a disciplinary isolator or cell-type facility," the SBI noted.

Five colony employees were detained:

  • head of the institution,

  • first deputy,

  • assistant manager on duty,

  • head of the operational department,

  • Operations officer of the operations department.

All those involved were informed of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 127 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (torture). They face up to 12 years in prison.
