The National Bank of Ukraine continues to refrain from active actions in the foreign exchange market, despite the rapid appreciation of the dollar, which has been ongoing since last week. The exchange rate of the American currency is actively growing, and today, May 27, it exceeded the mark of 40 hryvnias per dollar.
The maximum offer rate, the so-called "wishes", reached 40.40 UAH/$. There were no real deals at this level, but it did in fact prove devaluation sentiments. But the National Bank did not try to extinguish them or influence them in any way.
"Apparently, the devaluation of the hryvnia is part of the plans and tasks of the NBU, it does not stop it. Although everyone remembers that the National Bank is the main seller of the dollar on the interbank market, it is it that sets the tone there and determines the exchange rate. So 40.33 UAH/$ now suits the regulator. Last Monday we had 39.67 UAH/$ on Bloomberg, and now 40.33 UAH/$ is 1.7% devaluation of the hryvnia per week. At this rate, we can have 41 on the interbank market next Monday, and we can even exceed the government's plan for this year - everyone remembers that the 2024 state budget included an exchange rate of 40.7 UAH/$. And there is only one conclusion - so the National Bank and the government need it. The probable reason is an acute shortage of funds in the budget, which the authorities officially recognize. "The lower the hryvnia exchange rate, the more tax revenues denominated in the currency, and the more hryvnia comes from the sale of incoming Western financial assistance," said the chairman of the board of one of the banks.
At the end of the day, the NBU raised its official rate from UAH 40.1153/$ to UAH 40.3012/$
On the black market, the dollar selling rate on Monday rose from UAH 40.50/$ to UAH 40.57/$, and the buying rate rose from UAH 40.10/$ to UAH 40.38/$.
At banks, the maximum cash sale price jumped by 15 kopecks and reached 40.75 UAH/$ – it was set by MetaBank, and the average range was within 40.40-40.70 UAH/$. The redemption of American currency at bank counters took place in the corridor of 39.0-40.40 UAH/$.
The largest retail state-owned institutions, Privatbank and Oschadbank, set cash purchase/sale rates within the range of 39.90-40.50 UAH/$ and 40.10-40.60 UAH/$, respectively.
Card rates broke the 41-level today. Acordbank set a sale on cards at 41.15 UAH/$ – this is the maximum, and the minimum was at Ukreximbank at 40.25 UAH/$. Buying here was in the range of 39.50-40.55 UAH/$.
The average selling price of the dollar to current accounts of individuals within the limit of 50 thousand hryvnias per month was 40.47 UAH/$. The maximum price tag (including related commissions) reached 41.32 UAH/$, set by Avangard Bank, and the minimum was 40.40 UAH/$ (Idea Bank, TAScombank).
