After more than a century of operation, the publishing house “Naukova Dumka” , one of the key scientific publishers in Ukraine, has announced the closure of its operations. The decision to liquidate was made by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and the last day of operation of the bookstore on Tereshchenkovska Street and the online store will be December 2, 2024 .
Naukova Dumka, which has been in existence for 102 years , was the leading publishing house of academic literature in Ukraine. It specialized in the publication of scientific research, monographs, and reference literature, including fundamental works by Ukrainian scientists.
However, as reported by the head of the book distribution department, Viktoria Ageeva, this publishing house will no longer operate:
“No one will be able to buy our books anymore. The publishing house is being liquidated by decision of the NAS.”
The bankruptcy procedure was initiated on October 5, 2024 , according to data from the OpenDataBot platform.
The publishing house's employees were warned about their layoffs two months before the final closure. This caused sadness among many fans of "Scientific Thought", as the closure will also affect the bookstore on Tereshchenkovska, which has long been a center for scholars and lovers of Ukrainian literature.
The publishing house's online store will also cease operations on December 2.
The official reasons for the liquidation have not yet been fully disclosed. However, financial instability and resource constraints at the NAS of Ukraine were likely key factors. Lack of state support amid general economic difficulties may also have contributed to this decision.
