Bread remains a staple in the Ukrainian diet, but not all types are equally healthy. Experts warn that the most popular white bread made from high-grade wheat flour can be harmful to the body.
Nutritionists note that during deep cleaning of grains, almost all nutrients are removed - fiber, vitamins and minerals. As a result, such bread contains mostly "empty" calories and additives that improve the appearance and extend the shelf life of the product.
British cardiologist William Davis adds that modern wheat is significantly different from that grown in the past. Changes in the grain's genetic code affect the properties of the flour and its effect on the body - and not always to the benefit of consumers.
Nutritionists advise to give preference to rye bread or products made from whole grain flour, which retain more nutrients. They explain that manufacturers' pursuit of a soft texture, attractive crust and long shelf life often leads to the loss of the main value of the product - health benefits.
