A car carrying Russian riot police lieutenant colonel Veniamin Mazherin was blown up in the Kemerovo region of Russia. He was involved in war crimes committed in the Kyiv region during the occupation in 2022. The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported this on October 29.
According to the GUR, 45-year-old Mazzherin served in the OMON "Oberig" special unit of the Rosgvardia Directorate in the Kemerovo Region. It was this unit that participated in punitive actions against civilians in the Kyiv region during the Russian invasion in February-March 2022.
Intelligence confirmed that Mazzerin died on October 25th as a result of an explosion in his own car.
The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine has already opened criminal proceedings against servicemen of the "Oberig" unit for violations of the laws and customs of war. The investigation is based on eyewitness accounts and collected evidence of the participation of riot police officers in the torture and executions of civilians.
Back in April 2022, Ukrainian intelligence identified war criminals from this unit and developed a set of measures to bring them to justice.
"The Military Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reminds that there will be fair retribution for every war crime committed against the Ukrainian people," the message says.
As a reminder, on October 22, Ukrainian intelligence officers, together with representatives of the Caucasus Liberation Movement, conducted a special operation in Stavropol, Russia, during which at least three servicemen of the 247th Caucasian Cossack Regiment of the Russian Airborne Forces were eliminated.
