Hug Day, Maxim's Day: what is celebrated on January 21

Today, January 21, is a day full of events, memorable dates, and festive traditions. In the church calendar, this day is celebrated as the feast of St. Maxim the Confessor. According to legend, during torture he was deprived of the ability to speak, but through a divine miracle the saint regained the gift of speech. In the old style, St. Gregory the Wonderworker and St. Gregory of Kiev-Pechersk, known for their asceticism, are also honored.

International Hugging Day is celebrated on January 21st. The holiday was created to spread the warmth of human relationships and to remind us how important touch is for our health and emotional well-being. The tradition of the holiday is simple and touching: hugging family, friends, and even strangers.

In Ukraine, today is unofficially celebrated as Godfather's Day. This is a great opportunity to visit your godfathers, chat over a cup of tea, or exchange gifts. This day is popularly known as Maxim's Day. It is considered auspicious for reconciliation, establishing relationships, and making new acquaintances.

Interestingly, many prominent people were born on January 21. Among them are Ukrainian poet and author of the famous song “Oh, in the meadow there is a red viburnum” Stepan Charnetsky, military pilot Mykhailo Oparenko, football player Andriy Annenkov, and Hero of Ukraine Oleg Adamovsky. Christian Dior, founder of the legendary fashion house, actress Jeanne Davis, comedian Benny Hill, and outstanding opera singer Placido Domingo were born on this date.

As for the signs, this day promises: if the sun shines most of the day, then spring will be early, and summer - dry. A cold snap hints at a delay in frosts, and morning fog predicts warming.

Don't forget that on Maxim's Day you shouldn't quarrel, borrow or lend money. This can cause trouble and financial difficulties for the whole year. Instead, you should spend the day in harmony, paying attention to your family and friends.

So, January 21 is filled with both festive traditions and important reminders about how valuable it is to stay connected with people, keep peace in your heart, and enjoy every moment.
