Ukraine has announced its intention to invite Russia to an upcoming summit aimed at ending the war that has been raging in the country's east for years. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba made the statement, stressing the importance of political will on both sides to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
However, it seems that this may happen after Ukraine improves its position on the front line.
"The idea is that the next summit should be the end of the war. And, of course, we need the other side at the negotiating table. It is obvious that both sides are needed to end the war, our job is to ensure that Ukraine is in the strongest position at this time," the minister said.
“Of course, we understand perfectly well that the moment will come when we will need to talk to Russia,” he added.
At the same time, Kuleba acknowledged that the positions of the West and the "global South" differ.
“Yesterday, voices were heard from the Global South about the difficult compromises that need to be made. This is not the language we hear from Western partners,” the Foreign Minister said.
