Dyky noted that the Russian offensive in the Kursk region was not a surprise, but rather expected. “We even waited for it. The predictions were that they would gather forces in two weeks, not six,” the expert said. He emphasized that it took Russia longer than before to gather a forty-thousand-strong group, which indicates the depletion of its resources. This also indicates that the Russian army, although still large, is already severely depleted by the ongoing fighting.
Repression as a matter of survival
Yevhen Dykyi stressed that for the Putin regime, pushing Ukrainian forces out of the Kursk region is a matter of survival. “If we establish ourselves there for a long time and expand the territory, it will break the propaganda posture that tells the Russians about the border incident,” the expert explained. He noted that confirming Russia’s weakness in such an important operation would be a serious blow to the Putin regime.
Tactical aspects and strategic plans
Dyky spoke about the differences in the nature of the fighting in the Kursk region, comparing it to the trench warfare in eastern Ukraine. “It’s more like the initial phase of the war there, when we fought in northern Ukraine. The terrain is wooded and riverine, and the defenders are relying on mobile operations and maneuverability,” the expert noted. This highlights a new approach to fighting that may be less predictable.
The role of the 106th Airborne Division
Dyky paid special attention to the participation of the 106th Airborne Division in the Russian offensive operation. “This is one of the most battle-hardened units. They opposed us in the Kherson region and were re-established for the offensive in the Kursk region,” he explained. This division, as Dyky noted, is Russia’s main bet in this operation, which adds to its strategic importance.
