Specialists of the State Ecological Inspectorate of the Capital District responded to numerous appeals from Kyiv residents regarding the unusual color of the water in the Rusaniv Canal. People reported the appearance of a blue-green hue, which raised concerns about possible pollution.
During the survey, ecologists took samples of surface water to determine its composition and properties. The research was conducted at the Department of Instrumental and Laboratory Control of the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Capital District.
It turned out that there was a metal pipe in the canal, partially submerged in water. It belongs to a company that previously used it for water intake, but the pipe is not currently in use.
Regarding the change in the color of the water, experts noted that the blue-green color is of natural origin. It is the result of the decomposition processes of organic residues - algae and reeds that remained after the canal was cleared.
The results of the analyses showed a slight excess of the maximum permissible concentration in terms of chemical oxygen demand — by 1.1 times. This indicates an increased content of organic substances, but no dangerous pollution was recorded.
Environmentalists assured that the situation is under control, and such natural water changes do not pose a threat to residents.
