The most popular PIN codes: why they are easy to crack and how to protect your data

A study of popular PIN codes has shown that many users choose combinations that are too simple, making them vulnerable to hacking. Such passwords are easily guessed, which puts the security of smartphones, banking apps and other digital services at risk.

This study was published by ABC News.

The most popular PIN code in the world was the combination “1234”, which is used by almost every tenth person whose data participated in the study.

The top 10 most common and at the same time most dangerous PIN codes include:

  • 1234 is the absolute leader in terms of frequency of use.
  • 0000 is the second most popular, one of the very first combinations that hackers try to pick.
  • 1111 is another simple code that is easy to crack.
  • 1342 is a variation of the most popular PIN code, which still turned out to be too common.
  • 1212 is a simple and popular combination.
  • 4444 – repeating the same number also does not provide security.
  • 4321 is the reverse of the most popular password.
  • 2580 – looks complicated, but it’s just a vertical line on a smartphone keyboard, making it easy to guess.

Experts emphasize that these combinations should not be used anywhere, because they are the first to be checked during hacking attempts.

The authors of the study noted that such PIN codes are almost not encountered when registering on websites and social networks, as modern services require more complex passwords. However, they are widely used to unlock smartphones, tablets and access mobile banking.

Researchers also noticed a similar trend among text-based passwords. For example, “123456” still remains one of the most common passwords on the Internet, along with combinations like “qwerty” or “password.”.

How to protect your data?

To avoid hacking, avoid using simple PIN codes. The best option is a unique 6-digit combination that does not contain consecutive or repeated numbers.

It is also recommended:

  • Use biometric protection (fingerprint or Face ID).
  • Activate two-factor authentication for mobile banking and important services.
  • Change passwords and PINs regularly to minimize the risk of hacking.

Check your codes and take care of your security today!
