In recent weeks, the number of Ukrainian citizens applying for temporary protection in Germany has increased significantly. According to the German Ministry of the Interior, the number of applications from men aged 18–22 has increased from approximately 100 to 1,000 per week - a likely reason is the lifting of the travel ban for this category.
Overall, there was a gradual increase over the summer: 7,961 people were distributed through the Free registration system in May, 11,277 in August, and 18,755 in September. The department is not yet ready to assess whether this phenomenon is temporary.
Ukrainians who apply to Germany usually do not apply for refugee status, but receive a residence permit under §24 of the Residence Act (temporary protection). This gives the right to employment and social benefits immediately after receiving the status.
