Police have shut down a criminal group that may have defrauded citizens of over 45 million hryvnias. Members of this group received funds for the purchase of drones, but did not provide the drones to volunteers.
Earlier, on November 24, 2023, the “24” channel conducted an investigation aimed at identifying the whereabouts of hundreds of drones for which volunteers had already paid. It later emerged that the police had taken up the investigation.
Police have identified at least 92 victim volunteers who gave a group of “businessmen” over 45 million hryvnias. Most of the money was donated by ordinary people for the needs of the Ukrainian military.
Among those deceived were citizens from all corners of Ukraine, of different ages and professions, united by a desire to help the military.
It is noted that the criminal group offered very favorable prices for drones, 20-25% below market prices. This could have been a strategy to gain trust and create a positive reputation.
However, most customers received neither drones nor refunds.
Police reported that the criminals used the proceeds to purchase fake auto parts, textiles, and travel services.
The organizers of the criminal scheme were two women who had previously committed fraud in emergency situations. One of them is hiding abroad, and the other was detained. The maximum penalty for such crimes is twelve years in prison.
