In 2024, 19.7 thousand newborns were registered in Kyiv. For comparison, 7.9 thousand children were born in Lviv region during the same period, and 6.9 thousand in Dnipropetrovsk region.
At the same time, the overall demographic situation in Ukraine remains difficult. Last year, the birth rate in the country decreased by 95.3 thousand children, which is a drop of 35%. In the capital, the trend is also negative: in 2024, the number of newborns in Kyiv decreased by almost 10 thousand compared to 2021, or by 33.5%.
The Kyiv City State Administration notes that the decline in the birth rate began even before the full-scale war, and hostilities and mass migration of the population have only significantly intensified these processes. According to Valentyn Mondryivskyi, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, such demographic changes will have long-term consequences, in particular for the preschool education system.
According to him, the number of preschool children will gradually decrease, so it is important for the city to support the existing network of preschool education institutions in advance and ensure the effective functioning of kindergartens, taking into account demographic forecasts.
Statistics confirm these trends. Over the five years — from 2020 to 2024 — the number of children in preschool institutions in Ukraine decreased by almost 30%. In Kyiv, the reduction is even deeper and reaches 33%.
At the same time, actual attendance at kindergartens indicates that demand for preschool education remains high. Over 40,000 children attend municipal preschools in the capital every day, which is about 60% of the number officially enrolled. Compared to the first year of the full-scale war, the number of children attending kindergartens daily has increased by about 10%.
The Kyiv City State Administration emphasizes that this indicates the need for preschool education, as well as the trust of parents in the level of safety and professionalism of teaching staff. Despite the difficult conditions of wartime, Kyiv managed to preserve the existing network of kindergartens and restore the work of institutions that had not functioned for a long time.
In June 2022, 35 kindergartens opened in the capital in a full-time format, attended by about 800 children. Over the following years, thousands of pupils returned to preschool institutions, and now about 62 thousand applications have been registered in kindergartens in Kyiv. In June of this year, one of the kindergartens in the Obolonsky district also resumed work after reconstruction.
