Ukraine is considering the possibility of creating a new position – a cyber diplomat – in connection with the rapid development of technologies around the world.
Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov expressed this initiative during the opening of the Kyiv International Cyber Resilience Forum 2024.
“Currently, there is significant movement in this area in the world. Many countries already have their own cyber diplomats. I believe that this position will also appear in Ukraine soon, since this is an important direction in the fight,” Danilov said.
It is worth noting that digital diplomacy is first mentioned in Ukraine as a component of the public diplomacy strategy adopted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2021. At that time, it was aimed mainly at the “communication dimension.”.
Cyber diplomacy is the use of diplomatic resources and the performance of diplomatic functions in cyberspace to protect national interests. These interests are usually defined in national cyberspace or cybersecurity strategies, and include cybersecurity, countering cybercrime, building trust, protecting Internet freedom, and Internet governance.
