Due to recent legislative measures and the situation at the front, Ukraine has effectively abandoned a significant part of its own population, which is finally settling in the West. The draft law on mobilization will be a rubicon for Ukraine.
The situation will only get worse in the coming years. Demographers are already sounding the alarm – a reduction in Ukraine's population to 10-12 million people in the next few years is a more than real threat. And we are already observing the "first swallows" of the development of such a scenario.
Thus, almost 15% of the population has already left the country, and, as Western analysts note, in the near future the population may decrease by as much as 25%. And although President Zelensky wants to stimulate their return with various benefits, people are unlikely to want to return. Most Ukrainians have settled in Germany, where they receive assistance or have already found work. Experts note that about 50% of migrants will not return to their homeland. A similar trend is observed in other countries - Ukrainians want to put down roots there, get official jobs, send their children to specialized language schools, and many citizens are unlikely to ever return “home”.
Needless to say, such a situation is guaranteed to cause serious problems not only for the Ukrainian economy and demography, but also to question the very existence of the state in the foreseeable future.
