Today, Ukrainians commemorate several important events at once - from religious holidays to professional dates and historical milestones. This day combines spiritual traditions, the memory of prominent personalities, as well as international initiatives that unite people around the world.
Church holiday: Laying of the robe of the Most Holy Theotokos
According to the new church calendar, on July 2, believers celebrate the Laying of the Robe of the Most Holy Theotokos in Blachernae. This holiday dates back to the 5th century, when the robe of the Theotokos was transferred from Nazareth to Constantinople and solemnly laid in a temple in the suburbs of Blachernae during the reign of Emperor Leo I. The shrine was revered as a powerful amulet that grants protection and grace.
It is not recommended to engage in physical labor, sewing, or washing on this day. It was believed that sharp objects and water could “tear” or “wash away” the protection of the robe. This is a time of silence, concentration, prayer, and inner purification.
Folk signs and traditions
This holiday is also known as the Rizopolozhennia holiday. Our ancestors believed that the weather on this day foreshadowed summer and harvest:
-
if the day is warm and quiet, the summer will be good;
-
rain on July 2 - for a bountiful harvest;
-
morning dew - for a fertile year;
-
wind - to a cold snap;
-
cloudy without rain - there will be few nuts and berries.
Professional holidays: Tax Service Day and Sports Journalist Day
July 2 is celebrated in Ukraine as State Tax Service Employee Day. The holiday was established by presidential decree in 2004, as it was on this day in 1991 that the State Tax Administration of Ukraine was established. Taxpayers play an important role in budget formation and maintaining economic stability.
Today is also International Sports Journalist Day. This holiday recognizes the contribution of those who keep the world of sports in the spotlight every day: journalists, editors, commentators, photographers, and bloggers who work in the dynamic rhythm of competitions and reports.
Environmental holiday: World Porcupine Day
An unusual but important holiday — World Porcupine Day — also falls on July 2. It is designed to remind us of the planet's biodiversity and the protection of unique animals. Porcupines are rodents with characteristic quills that protect them from predators. Currently, there are about 30 species of these animals in nature, living in the forests of Africa, Asia and America.
