In Transcarpathia, the Security Service of Ukraine detained two individuals who acted in the interests of Hungarian military intelligence and carried out espionage activities against Ukraine. The SBU press service reports this.
According to the investigation, the detainees were collecting intelligence on military infrastructure, air defense, and social sentiment in the border areas. Their supervisor was a career officer of the Hungarian special services, whose identity has already been established.
One of the agents is a 40-year-old resident of the Beregov district, a former soldier. He was recruited back in 2021 and put on “standby mode”. He began active activity in September 2024. At the direction of the curator, he investigated public sentiment in the region, possible reactions to the introduction of a peacekeeping contingent (in particular, Hungarian military personnel), studied the situation on the “black market” of weapons, the number of personnel and equipment in units of the Defense Forces.
The agent paid particular attention to scouting out the location of the S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems. After collecting the data, he left for Hungary, using fictitious documents to care for a sick relative.
Another person involved was a former servicewoman who served in the Security Forces until 2025. Her task was to transmit information about the presence of aviation and defense systems in Transcarpathia, as well as intelligence about the unit where she served.
The SBU documented their meetings with the Hungarian curator, during which one of the agents was given a special encrypted phone for communication. They were also supposed to obtain information about the Ukrainian military's official vehicles and the Ukrainian Armed Forces' losses at the front.
During the searches, equipment and other evidence of subversive activities were seized from the detainees. They were charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — high treason under martial law. The sanction of the article provides for life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
This is the first publicly documented case in the history of independent Ukraine when agents of Hungarian military intelligence were detained.
