The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has detained a prominent politician and lawyer in Kyiv for extorting a $1 million bribe. In exchange for the sum, the politician promised to resolve land issues for the businessman, in particular, to secure the lease of a plot of land in a recreational area of Kyiv near the Dnipro River, which belongs to the Kyiv community.
Law enforcement officers arrested the suspect at the scene of the crime after he was given $900,000 as an “advance payment” for his services. This amount was part of the planned $1 million he was demanding for resolving the land issue.
The suspect faces up to 12 years in prison for extortion and receiving a large bribe. Investigative actions are currently underway, and the SBU continues its investigation.
