The Slovak National Party (SNS) has made a statement that Slovakia has the right to demand financial compensation from Ukraine for assistance provided during the war. This was reported by the director of the party leader's office, Zuzana Škopcová, referring to the Slovak publication Teraz.sk .
The party called on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to raise the issue at the next meeting of the European Council. The SNS believes that the EU should recognize Slovakia's right to a share in Ukraine's natural resources, in particular mineral wealth.
"If Ukraine has already signed an agreement with the US that provides for compensation for military assistance, it is not clear why it does not commit to European countries," Shkoptsova said.
The party recalled that the amount of aid to Ukraine from Slovakia has already exceeded three billion euros. Now the SNS insists that these costs be compensated - at least partially.
Party leader Andriy Danko said he will discuss the issue with Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenicki on May 26. They plan to prepare the appropriate calculations and document an appeal to the prime minister.
According to the SNS, since Ukraine, under recent agreements with the US, has already committed to returning some of the American aid, similar obligations should also be made to the EU countries. The party believes that Fico should publicly raise this issue at the EU leadership level.
This statement has potential political resonance: at a time when the Ukrainian army continues to deter Russian aggression, some European political forces are seeking to translate humanitarian and military support into financial claims.
