The State Bureau of Investigation reported the discovery of a serious crime in one of the military units in the Kyiv region. According to the investigation, the former first deputy commander, together with a member of the service commission, intentionally concealed the fact of the suicide of a serviceman and forged documents, indicating that he died in battle.
Instead of an objective investigation into the causes of death, officials drew up a false report stating that the soldier had died while performing a combat mission. This document was officially issued and forwarded as intended, which provided grounds for the payment of 15 million hryvnias to the deceased's family as compensation for death during combat operations.
The SBI emphasized that both servicemen knew for sure that the soldier had committed suicide. Falsifying the circumstances of his death is not only a criminal offense, but also causes serious harm to the military service system, trust in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and also causes ethical and legal consequences for the family of the deceased.
The persons involved in the case have already been notified of the suspicion. They face punishment, including imprisonment.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing. Investigators are determining whether other military unit officials were involved in the crime.
