The Verkhovna Rada has expressed the need to review Ukraine's energy infrastructure in connection with the increase in attacks on it. The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy, Andriy Gerus, noted in a program on Ukrainian Radio on March 29 that work is currently underway to create a new component of the energy system. According to him, this involves the development of a wide network of small power plants, which will complicate their potential attack due to their large number.
Gerus emphasized that energy facilities cannot be hidden, as their location is known by power lines. Therefore, active work is being done to change the architecture of the power grid to add more decentralized generators located closer to end users.
“In simple terms, when we have 5-10 large power plants, they become easy targets for attacks. But if we have hundreds of small power plants located near consumers, especially in areas with high electricity demand, then attacking them will be practically unheard of or extremely expensive,” Gerus explained.
The key objective is to create a large number of small generators across the country. This is already being implemented through the installation of solar and gas power plants, particularly in urban areas. The new structure of the energy system should ensure its flexibility and reliability, ensuring a stable electricity supply for consumers.
