The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering taking control of the territory around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), proposing to make it a “neutral territory” that would fall under American control, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The White House made the proposal to Ukrainian authorities last week in Paris, according to sources familiar with the matter, as it sought to find ways to end the war. The move could be part of broader initiatives to stabilize Ukraine and preserve its strategic infrastructure, including nuclear facilities.
According to reports, the Zaporizhzhia NPP could supply electricity to both Ukrainian-controlled territories and Russian-occupied regions captured after 2022. This move is seen as an opportunity to create greater stability in the energy sector.
Interestingly, the issue of control over energy facilities was raised by Donald Trump back in March of this year during a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump then offered the United States the opportunity to purchase Ukrainian power plants, including nuclear facilities, calling it "the best protection for this infrastructure.".
The US is currently discussing the possibility of influencing the situation around the Zheleznodorozhny NPP, one of the largest and most important nuclear plants in Europe. However, this move raises questions about the possible consequences for Ukraine's sovereignty and the long-term geopolitical relationship between the countries.
