The Security Service of Ukraine announced the exposure of a foreign intelligence agent network that operated in Transcarpathia and was engaged in collecting information of a defense and socio-political nature.
According to the investigation, the coordinator of the network was a Hungarian military intelligence officer named Zoltan André. It is reported that previously, in 2016-2020, he worked in Georgia under diplomatic cover, and since 2021 he has focused his activities on Ukraine.
As law enforcement officials established, the agent recruited local residents and engaged them in information gathering. The main tasks included obtaining data on the level of military security in the region, the socio-political mood of the population, as well as the possible reaction of local residents in the event of a hypothetical entry of Hungarian troops.
According to the SBU, coordination of activities took place during personal meetings organized on the territory of Hungary.
Against the backdrop of this investigation, it is worth noting that relations between Ukraine and Hungary have remained tense in recent times. Official Kyiv has repeatedly stated that it has disagreements with Budapest on a number of political and security issues.
Investigative actions are currently underway to identify all those involved in the activities of the agent network and document their actions.
