Doctors at Okhmatdyt in Kyiv performed a unique operation for a 9-month-old patient from Ternopil, the Ministry of Health reported.
The child was diagnosed with a complex heart defect in utero, and at birth, an additional disease was discovered that caused liver failure. During the liver transplant, the little patient also had her heart defect corrected. It is reported that after the girl was born, another disease was discovered that led to liver failure. At the age of 9 months, Tetiana had developmental disorders that threatened her life.
“Each of these problems could be solved at different times and by different methods, and simultaneous surgical intervention was very risky. However, without surgery, the child had no chance of survival. The operation was unique: simultaneous correction of the heart defect and liver transplantation from a donor - her mother,” the doctors emphasized.
It is currently reported that the little patient is feeling much better, constantly smiling, and preparing to return home.
