Ukraine is preparing for a possible cessation of supplies of air defense systems from the United States, Ukrainian President's Strategic Advisor Oleksandr Kamyshin said in a comment to Radio Liberty during the GLOBSEC conference in the Czech Republic.
Kamyshin reacted to the words of Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, who the day before announced a reduction in spending on military assistance to Ukraine in the US defense budget for 2026. According to the Associated Press , this could mean a restriction or complete cessation of supplies of critically important air defense systems.
“We are in the biggest war in generations, and in this war, no country can stand alone against Russia. Therefore, the support of both Europe and the United States of America is important for us,” Kamyshin noted.
According to him, the Ukrainian government is considering the possibility of replacing critical types of weapons, in particular air defense systems, but recognizes that finding a full-fledged alternative to American systems will be extremely difficult. “The entire team is working today to find these solutions,” the presidential advisor emphasized.
Roman Kostenko, Secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, also commented on Hegseth's statement. In his opinion, it did not come as a surprise. Kostenko emphasized that with the coming to power of Donald Trump, the US has not actually approved new decisions on aid - they are only transferring to Ukraine what was contracted during the Biden administration.
The People's Deputy added that the most important thing is that there is no complete ban on the sale of weapons, even if military aid as such is reduced.
Ukraine finds itself in a situation where it has to develop survival strategies without guarantees of stable support from one of its key allies.
