The Trump administration is pushing an initiative for a new peaceful settlement to the war in Ukraine that would include a ceasefire and de facto recognition of Russian control over temporarily occupied territories, including Crimea, CNN reported, citing sources familiar with the details of the negotiations.
According to information, a version of the agreement was presented last Thursday in Paris to representatives of European countries and Ukraine. The main idea of the document is to “freeze” the front line, stop hostilities, and fix the current status of territories under Russian control. Including the Crimean peninsula, which the US is allegedly ready to recognize as Russian within the framework of a potential agreement.
At the same time, journalists note that such proposals are unlikely to find support in Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously stated that Ukraine does not recognize any occupied territories as Russian — this is a clear “red line” that Kyiv is not ready to cross.
The proposal has already been conveyed to Moscow by phone during a conversation between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. However, there are no final agreements yet. According to CNN sources, discussions on the terms will continue next week in London with the participation of European partners and the Ukrainian side.
In addition, another separate meeting is planned between Trump's special representative for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and Russian representatives to further advance the framework agreements.
As a reminder, the Center for Countering Disinformation called the Easter "truce" initiated by Russia another information special operation aimed at misleading the United States. President Zelensky also criticized this initiative by Putin, calling it "an attempt to play with people's lives.".
