US President Donald Trump has called for a reopening of the impeachment inquiry launched against him in 2019 over alleged pressure on Ukraine. In a post on the social media site Truth Social, he called the case the “Ukrainian impeachment” and said it was “a far more serious and illegal hoax than Watergate.”
Trump stressed that he hoped for the intervention of the appropriate authorities, including the US Congress, to reexamine the circumstances of the allegations. He also accused Adam Schiff, then deputy chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, of "dishonesty and corruption."
The first impeachment proceedings against Trump were initiated by the Democratic Party in 2019. The reason was his phone call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the Democrats, Trump demanded that Ukraine investigate the activities of Hunter Biden, the son of Joe Biden, which was seen as pressure to influence the US presidential election.
Despite the House of Representatives impeaching Trump, the Senate acquitted him. He has repeatedly stated that the charges are politically motivated and that the case is fabricated. Now, on the eve of a new election campaign, Trump is returning to this topic, using it as an argument against his opponents.
His new statements may exacerbate the political confrontation in the United States, as the 2019 impeachment still remains one of the most controversial events in modern American politics.
